Something which I am try to get my head around: is John or are Johns better "because" they are different or are they "just different" but more importantly very competent. I have no doubt that diversity at large is an immense source of wealth but I also strongly belive from experience that comptency doesnt have a specific "look and feel"

I see your point and in my opinion, there is no "better" staff but a better organisation because diversity of thoughts is incorporated. If a manager is not well trained when taking in a neurodivergent people on his/her team, the risk is to compare others to the new employee and highlights the overperformance. This is not the right way, every one with their own skills is needed.
